Exciting Start to the Year with Library Orientation at Newport Middle School
Newport Middle School students are being welcomed back this week with Mrs. Montero’s annual library orientation. As always, her presentation is packed with important information, fun activities, and an introduction to the many opportunities awaiting students this school year.
One of the highlights she shared is the Outdoor Odyssey Club, co-led by Mrs. Montero and Mr. Howard. Thanks to a grant from the North Carolina Department of Natural and Cultural Resources (DNCR), students will experience grand outdoor adventures. This year’s trips include Bear Island on September 24, Beach Yoga on October 31, Fort Macon in April, and Cape Lookout on May 1.
Mrs. Montero also introduced students to the upcoming Spelling Bee. This marks the second year Newport Middle School will participate, and excitement is building. Last year, Kinley South proudly earned the title of school champion and went on to finish second in the district. Now entering seventh grade, Kinley is determined to bring home the district’s top prize—but she’ll face tough competition from classmates eager to rise to the challenge.
In addition to the Spelling Bee, Mrs. Montero highlighted other opportunities such as Battle of the Books, Student Council, and National Junior Honor Society (NJHS). Each offers students a chance to grow, lead, and showcase their talents.
Orientation wrapped up with a fun activity called “Hot Books,” a library twist on the classic “Hot Potato” game. Students passed books around and had the chance to sample different titles, sparking excitement for reading throughout the year.
With so many activities, competitions, and clubs on the horizon, students and staff at Newport Middle School are looking forward to a year full of adventure, learning, and success. Go ahead and dive into a book with Mrs. Montero!

Mark your calendars—Newport Middle School is excited to welcome students and families back for our annual Open House on Tuesday, August 19, 2025, from 4:00–6:00 PM.
This floating event gives families the flexibility to drop in anytime during the two-hour window. Open House is the perfect opportunity for parents and students to get a head start on the new school year. Here’s what you can expect:
Receive Your Schedule – Find out your classes for the upcoming year so you can start preparing for a successful semester.
Meet Your Teachers – Take time to introduce yourself, ask questions, and build early connections with the educators who will guide your learning this year.
Check Your Transportation – Make sure bus routes and transportation plans are in place before the first day of school.
Open House is more than just a chance to gather information—it’s an opportunity to ease the transition into a new school year, reduce first-day jitters, and start building a supportive partnership between families and teachers.
We can’t wait to see our students and families back in the building. Let’s make the 2025–2026 school year the best one yet!
